WHAT IS STROBING?

What is strobing?

I do love a make up craze, but being more alabaster than amber I've found the contouring phenomenon a little challenging. In fact, after much experimenting, many bearded lady looks and a lot of make up remover, I've found going light on the contour and heavy on the highlight is the most natural way to mould my cheekbones into some semblance of shape.

Little did I know I was waaay ahead of my time; what I've been calling 'lumitouring' has now been internationally branded 'strobing' - which sounds more like something one would do at a 90s rave... big box, little box... anyone?

This trend is much more make up-amateur-friendly. Look at yourself blurring your vision a bit - this helps you see your face in a more abstract way - decide which features you want to bring forward and lightly apply a luminizer to that area (cheekbones, brow bones, down the centre of your nose, on your chin). Be careful when it comes to forehead and your Cupid's Bow - any highlight applied there that's less than 100% perfect can you make you look more sweat-bag than sculpted - same goes for any product with 'sparkle' (steer clear of sparkle...). Here are the highlights we swear by:

For a wide range of skin tones - BECCA {Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed}

100% natural for normal to oily skin - W3LL PEOPLE {Bio-Brightener Invisible Powder}

For mature skin - Studio 10 {Youth Lift Glow-plexion}

The pro-choice (with the best name) - Kevyn Aucoin {The Celestial Powder in Candlelight}

The original queen of strobing - Marilyn Monroe
