THE MEDIK8 CRYSTAL RETINAL GUIDE

Medik8 Crystal Retinal is a vitamin A night serum that helps improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven tone and skin texture. At Cult Beauty, you’ll find five strengths, from 0.01% to 0.20% retinaldehyde, so you can choose one that suits your skin and your experience with vitamin A.

The numbers on the tube can take a little decoding. Where should you start? Is 6 the next step after 3? And how do you know your skin is ready? We’ve brought together the essentials, plus advice from Daniel Isaacs, Chief Product Officer & Founding Partner of Medik8, to help you find your fit. For the wider brand story, discover everything you need to know about Medik8.

In this Article:

What is Medik8 Crystal Retinal?

Part of the Medik8 line up, Crystal Retinal pairs retinaldehyde, often shortened to retinal, with hydrating ingredients in a cream-textured serum. It works overnight to help skin look smoother, brighter and firmer, with a choice of concentrations for different levels of vitamin A experience.

The formula gives its star ingredient some thoughtful company:

  • Retinaldehyde: a form of vitamin A that helps soften the appearance of fine lines and improve the look of uneven skin tone and texture.
  • Hyaluronic acid and glycerin: moisture-attracting ingredients that help keep skin feeling hydrated and comfortable. Get to know more hyaluronic acid skin care if hydration is high on your wish list.
  • Vitamin E: an antioxidant that complements the formula.

Medik8 also uses crystal encapsulation, a patented carrot seed oil complex and airless packaging to help protect the retinal’s stability. It’s a considered formula, right down to the tube.

Retinal vs retinol

Retinal and retinol both belong to the vitamin A family, known as retinoids. Retinol needs two conversion steps to become retinoic acid, the active form of vitamin A in the skin. Retinal needs one.

That difference helps explain retinal’s appeal, but the percentage alone won’t tell you how a formula will feel on your skin. Retinol and retinal percentages aren’t interchangeable. If you’re switching, choose your starting strength carefully and introduce it gradually. Our retinol vs retinal guide takes a closer look at the differences.

Which Medik8 Crystal Retinal strength should I use?

Crystal Retinal 3 is Medik8’s suggested starting point for most vitamin A beginners. Crystal Retinal 1 is the lower-strength option for sensitive skin. Strengths 6, 10 and 20 suit progressively more experienced users, with skin tolerance guiding each step.

Choose according to the vitamin A your skin already tolerates and how consistently you use it. If you are new to retinal, a higher number doesn’t need to be on your shopping list just yet.

Product Retinal Who it suits
Crystal Retinal 1 0.01% Sensitive skin or a cautious introduction
Crystal Retinal 3 0.03% Most vitamin A beginners
Crystal Retinal 6 0.06% Regular vitamin A users
Crystal Retinal 10 0.1% Advanced users comfortable with lower strengths
Crystal Retinal 20 0.20% Experienced users comfortable with Crystal Retinal 10

You may also have spotted Crystal Retinal 24. The wider Medik8 range includes this 0.24% option, which is exclusive to Medik8. This guide focuses on the five strengths available at Cult Beauty.

Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3 vs 6 vs 10

The main difference is the retinal concentration: Crystal Retinal 3 contains 0.03%, Crystal Retinal 6 contains 0.06% and Crystal Retinal 10 contains 0.1%. Your existing routine and tolerance determine which makes sense for you.

  • Choose Crystal Retinal 3 if you’re new to vitamin A and your skin isn’t particularly sensitive. It gives you a starting point for building a consistent evening routine.
  • Consider Crystal Retinal 6 if you’re already comfortable with vitamin A, or you’ve finished at least one tube of Crystal Retinal 3 and your skin is tolerating it well.
  • Consider Crystal Retinal 10 once you’re an experienced user who has comfortably worked through Crystal Retinal 6. Take the next step when your skin is ready.

For particularly sensitive skin, start by considering Crystal Retinal 1. And if your current strength is giving you the results you want, there’s no deadline to move on. Your skin gets the deciding vote.

How to use Medik8 Crystal Retinal

Use Crystal Retinal in the evening after cleansing and before moisturiser. Medik8’s current instructions recommend two pumps for the face and neck. Always follow the directions on your own packaging.

  1. Cleanse. Remove makeup and SPF, then gently pat your skin dry.
  2. Apply Crystal Retinal. Massage two pumps over the face and neck, keeping the face serum away from the eye area.
  3. Follow with moisturiser. Allow the serum to absorb, then apply your evening moisturiser. Medik8 Advanced Night Restore is designed to pair with vitamin A and helps leave skin feeling nourished.
  4. Wear sunscreen the next morning. Make facial SPF part of your daily routine and follow its application and reapplication instructions. Our guide to applying SPF covers the details.

How often should you use it?

Introduce Crystal Retinal gradually. Medik8 recommends this schedule for new users:

Introduction period How often to apply
Weeks 1 and 2 Twice a week
Weeks 3 and 4 Every other night, if tolerated
From week 5 Every night, if comfortable

Let your skin set the pace. If it becomes irritated, pause use and allow it to settle before reconsidering the frequency or strength. Persistent irritation is a reason to seek advice from a healthcare professional.

When should I move up a Crystal Retinal strength?

Use at least one full tube of your current strength and make sure your skin is comfortable before considering the next level. Finishing a tube is a useful checkpoint, rather than an automatic signal to increase the concentration.

Crystal Retinal is designed as a progressive strength ladder, so there’s no need to rush to the highest concentration. We recommend using at least one full tube of your current strength before considering moving up to the next level. Once your skin is comfortable with your current strength, you can progress gradually through the ladder according to your skin’s tolerance.

- Daniel Isaacs, Chief Product Officer & Founding Partner of Medik8

Follow the next step in the range: 1, 3, 6, 10, then 20. Crystal Retinal 20 is a 0.20% formula for experienced users who have comfortably used Crystal Retinal 10. Give dryness, stinging or sensitivity time to settle before thinking about a stronger tube.

Common mistakes when introducing retinal

“One of the biggest mistakes is moving through vitamin A strengths too quickly,” says Daniel Isaacs, Chief Product Officer & Founding Partner of Medik8.

A few small choices can make the introduction easier:

  • Choosing your starting strength by the highest number. Base it on your skin’s tolerance and previous vitamin A use.
  • Using it every night from the start. Give your skin time to adjust with the gradual introduction schedule above.
  • Applying extra to hurry things along. Stick to the recommended amount. A generous extra pump isn’t part of the progression plan.
  • Changing several products at once. Keep the rest of your routine familiar while you introduce retinal, so it’s easier to see how your skin responds.
  • Overlooking moisturiser or morning SPF. Both have a place alongside your evening serum.

Medik8 Crystal Retinal FAQ

How long does Medik8 Crystal Retinal take to work?

An independent clinical study of Crystal Retinal 6 followed 33 participants over 12 weeks. Medik8 reports improvements in the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots and firmness, alongside skin clarity, after one tube.*

That gives you a more useful timeframe than checking the mirror after every application. Results and tolerance vary, so use your chosen strength consistently and give your routine time before deciding whether to change it.

Can I use Crystal Retinal with vitamin C?

Yes. Medik8’s CSA approach combines vitamin C and sunscreen in the morning with vitamin A at night. You could use Medik8 C-Tetra Serum in your morning routine, followed by SPF, and keep Crystal Retinal for the evening. Introduce new products gradually so you can judge how each one suits your skin.

Can I use Crystal Retinal around my eyes?

Choose a formula designed for the eye area, such as Medik8 Crystal Retinal Ceramide for Eyes. This is a separate product from the face serum, with its own application instructions. Apply around the eyes in the evening, avoiding the eyelids, and introduce it gradually according to the directions.
