From Disappointment to a Top 5 Favorite — Despite the Packaging
When I first tried the RMS Hydra Setting Powder, I was disappointed by the visible shimmer that didn’t align with the promised “soft-focus” finish. On my 40+ skin, shimmer usually highlights fine lines instead of blurring them. At that point, I felt the powder was more style than substance. After learning the right technique — brushing it in with a puffing brush — the shimmer becomes unnoticeable, leaving behind the softest, smoothest finish. It went from a product I barely liked to one of my top 5 setting powders. In real life (not just on camera), it delivers a beautiful, blurred look without cakiness or dryness. The downside remains the packaging. The plastic topper with a flip-up cover over the stencil holes is impractical and frustrating — difficult to open without also removing the main lid, which risks spilling powder everywhere. I’ve even had to transfer it into another compact just to make it usable, which means extra waste and cost. In short: the powder itself is a hidden gem once applied correctly, but the packaging is a real design flaw that undermines the luxury feel.

Shimmer Undermines the Promise of a Soft-Focus Finish
My frustration continues when high-end products with sophisticated descriptions don’t deliver — and sadly, the RMS Hydra Setting Powder was another letdown. I purchased it hoping for a soft, blurred finish that would set my makeup without looking dry or cakey on my 40+ skin. Instead, I was surprised by the amount of micro-sparkle in the formula, which directly contradicted the “soft-focus” satin-matte finish promised. While the shimmer here is more subtle than in some other powders I’ve tried, it still highlights fine lines and crepey texture rather than blurring them. And here’s the biggest issue for me: this powder may look good on camera, but who wants to walk around during the day with shimmer all over their face? On mature skin, glow and soft-matte should not equal shimmer — they simply don’t go hand in hand. The marketing — with terms like “Gel2Powder technology” and “HerbalHydrate complex” — combined with the high price point, sets up the expectation of superior performance. In practice, however, the presence of shimmer works against the product’s claims, making it more style than substance for those of us seeking true blurring and real-life wear.
