Beauty Survival at Burning Man

Two years ago I found my spiritual home, but there are two problems with it, 1. It only exists for one week a year and 2. It is housed in the most inhospitable desert in the middle of Nevada. I’m heading back to Burning Man for a second time in 5 days and am in the midst of packing, costume creation – sewing EL Wire to anything that will sit still for five minutes and am just about to do my beauty shop.

{Ultrasun SPF 50 Body} – An all day sunscreen designed for the active (or forgetful) on holiday because it really doesn’t budge, I use it on my face too. I’m going to be building a huge wooden installation for the first three days from sunrise to sunset in the 40 degree heat with no shelter. One application in the morning is all you need no matter how much you sweat.

{Sunday Riley Good Genes} – Because nothing makes your skin look better in the morning no matter what you put it through the day and night before. I have a bunch of Cold-pressed quinoa-eating Californian Girls to keep up with 🙂 IN fact, with that in mind I am now adding {Vita Liberata’s Phenomenal} self tanner too.

{Pommade Divine} – The packaging is not the sexiest in the world, but it leaves your lips looking beautiful in even this most savage of dusty, dry, alkaline environments. A 50ml tube of this will go everywhere with me to ease cracked dry hands, lips and feet for you and everyone around you.

{Dr Hauschka Rose Cream} – This is just the ticket for easing my skin into this alien environment plus it’s very light for the luggage allocation. It will go with me on the plane too for constant moisture top-ups.

{Korres Cleansing Wipes} – with the lack of water these are essential and hugely refeshing.

At the end of every day I’ll be using {Cherish Body Serum by Therapie} as it not only hydrates, but is great for helping the skin with any trauma like nicks, bites and scrapes, burns etc. Plus it’s aromatherapeutically comforting when you are feeling a little out of your depth…

{Sachajuan Leave in Conditioner} – you don’t have any water other than that which you bring. A short shower uses gallons of water, so for a quick wash you don’t want to be double rinsing. Plus you can spray this on to protect from dryness and it smells like fairies (disclaimer – this is imagined). No dry shampoo needed here, the dust is the perfect texture.

{Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint SPF 20} – It just makes my skin look great even with no sleep, it also doesn’t look like you are wearing anything so you don’t look too try-hard (it comes in {5ml mini sets} for travel). I used the {RMS Un-cover up Concealer} to get the really big dark circles as it’s super moisturising and for the rest, really big dark glasses.

Nail Wraps are key when you need to disguise the slightly hobo dirt under nails look ones gets after a day in the desert, I’m going with {Fowl Play} from {NCLA}

{Aesop Rinse-Free Hand Sanitizer} – Portaloos, or Portapotties as they hilariously call them in the States definitely call for this.

Another lovely thing to take around with you is a facial spray for a little relief from the dry heat, it’s nice to pass round to other folks too. My favourite spray is by Michelle Roques-O’Neil called {Therapie Restore Aura Spray}. It’s great for dispelling the stress of travel, hydrating and smells beautiful.

Last but not least….A bucket load of {Faust’s Potions Hangover Cures} to keep the momentum up through the week (and they make lovely gifts for people), and {H30 Hydration} salts do a very good job of keeping your electrolyte salts up after all that sweating.

Wish me luck!
